What is the Work Based Learning Program?

The Work Based Learning (WBL) program is a job training program to prepare our older students to transition into adulthood. We survey the student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) and conduct a variety of vocational assessments with our students before they turn fourteen years old to develop vocational objectives and goals for their IEP.

We also evaluate indices of happiness and unhappiness for each student to help us determine their preferences in vocational tasks. Then, through the use of a number of assessments over the course of a year, we are able to determine which vocational tasks the student will engage for the longest amount of time, which will help to guide the selection of WBL job sites.

Our program formally begins when the student turns sixteen years old. Our students learn to complete a variety of vocational tasks for local companies either in the community or at Garden Academy in our vocational space. Our school partners with over fifteen jobs sites in West Orange and other neighboring communities to allow our students to participate in the community and learn job skills in real-life settings.
